An example of a kindergarten program in a kindergarten service

St Thomas's Riverview Kindergarten, St Lucia

Established in 1968, St Thomas's Riverview Kindergarten has provided early education for generations of Queensland children.

The kindergarten caters for 2 groups of up to 22 children each week during the Queensland school terms. Each group attends the service 5 days each fortnight.

The service's operating hours are from 8.45am to 2.45pm to ensure children can participate in the kindergarten program for an average of 15 hours a week, 40 weeks a year.

A qualified early childhood teacher, who has been the kindergarten director for more than 35 years, delivers the learning program. She is supported by qualified teacher's assistants with a ratio of 2 qualified staff to each group of 22 children.

Children participate in teacher-led and child-initiated activities that follow a general routine of outdoor time, group time for language development, indoor play and activities, group music time and rest.

The teacher uses the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline to develop the program and monitor children's learning during the year.

Children enjoy a diverse range of play and real-life learning experiences including art and craft, cooking, gardening, music and dressing up. Many activities are based around themes. Sometimes these themes are planned in advance and other times they are influenced by the children.

Through these experiences children build on their literacy and numeracy knowledge, learn to cooperate with others, express ideas and investigate solutions to problems.

Parental involvement in the kindergarten program is actively encouraged. The kindergarten has a parent roster system where parents spend one day each term at the service. Roster days allow parents to observe and support their child's learning experience.

A community-owned, not-for-profit organisation, the kindergarten's operations are managed by a voluntary committee elected from the families of enrolled children.

The elected committee manages the day-to-day running of the kindergarten including finance, correspondence, maintenance, fundraising, recruitment and other tasks as needed.

St Thomas's Riverview Kindergarten is affiliated with Lady Gowrie.
