An example of a kindergarten program in a long day care service Page ContentLEAD Childcare - Kedron Park RoadLEAD Childcare - Kedron Park Road is a well-established long day care service caring for up to 75 children. Before the introduction of the Queensland Kindergarten Funding Scheme, the centre's kindy-aged children were cared for by a 2-year qualified group leader in a room catering for children aged 3 to 5.As a participant in the 2010 Pilot Kindergarten Program, the service recruited a qualified teacher to deliver the kindergarten program. The teacher had previously worked in child care while studying so her knowledge of the sector and enthusiasm for teaching made a positive impact on the centre and kindy-aged children. The kindergarten program is offered from Monday to Friday for 7.5 hours a day. Children enrolled in the program can be cared for from 6.30am to 6.30pm as required by their families. Outside the kindergarten program hours, children are cared for by other staff members. Most children participate in the kindergarten program for more than the minimum requirement of 15 hours a week. As the program is run in the room catering for 3 to 5 year olds, a small number of younger children are enjoying early exposure to kindergarten.Feedback from parents indicates children are thriving and have found a new level of learning in attending the service. Educators from the service's other rooms have been inspired by the kindergarten program to develop new activities for children to enjoy. The additional funding received from the Queensland Government has been used to purchase age-appropriate resources for the kindergarten program and develop a specific area for use by the class. The funding is also used to provide additional learning experiences for the children such as music, art and dance sessions.
