Indigenous professional development

​The Department delivers a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood education and care professional development initiatives across regional and remote locations in Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia.

  • Remote indigenous professional development (RIPD)
  • Indigenous mentoring program (IMP)
  • Indigenous leadership program (ILP)

These initiatives are managed by the Department through the Indigenous Priorities team, with funding from the Australian Government.

Remote indigenous professional development (RIPD) project

The remote indigenous professional development (RIPD) project promotes understanding and use of the early years learning framework (EYLF) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood educators in regional, remote and very remote areas of Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia.

The project aims to meet the learning needs of entry level educators as they build on their understanding and implementation of the EYLF through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural ways of doing and learning.

Professional development workshops are facilitated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood teaching experts, known as pedagogical leaders, with extensive cultural and early childhood education knowledge.

Workshops include site visits, connection with land and country and practical learning experiences using a custom-made kit of teaching resources that participants take back to their service.

The program gives priority to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators in regional, remote and very remote early childhood services, with a specific focus in 2016-17 on supporting the participation of educators in budget based funded services.

Participants' travel, accommodation, meals and staff replacement costs are met by the RIPD project.

Educators who successfully complete the workshop may be eligible for credit towards their Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, using the recognition of prior learning process.

Overall response to the content and delivery of the RIPD program has been extremely positive.

Mentoring program

The Indigenous mentoring program offers an exciting opportunity to emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood educational leaders. The program builds on the Remote indigenous professional development (RIPD) Project to promote understanding and use of belonging, being and becoming: Early years learning framework (EYLF) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood educators.

The six month mentoring program is facilitated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood education pedagogical leaders. It aims to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educator's leadership skills to guide the development of programs that support children's learning, development and cultural wellbeing.

Building and sustaining skills in using digital technologies in a professional learning community is a key aspect of the mentoring program.

Expressions of interest are invited from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators from regional and remote locations across Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia who have participated in an RIPD program.

In 2017, the program will run from May to October.
